Weight Loss & Obesity Surgery

Alexander Dietetics
can advise you on how to lose weight in a healthy and maintainable way, by helping you balance your food and fluid intake in the best way possible for your personal requirements.

We will not offer you a quick fix or fad diet, but a meal plan that is sustainable and suitable for long term use.

You will gain knowledge on how to change your eating habits for life, and how to balance your nutrient intake to help promote long term health for you and your family.

What is your Body Mass Index (BMI)?

Body Mass Index (BMI) describes the relationship between your weight and height.

It does not take into account your body shape or muscle mass (therefore a football player, for example, may have a high BMI but a low percentage of body fat). However for most of us, BMI is a good indication of whether we need to lose or gain weight.

You can calculate your BMI by dividing your weight in kilograms by your height in metres squared. Therefore if you weigh 65kg and are 168cm tall, your BMI would be 65/2.8 = 23.2 (which is in the "healthy" range).

<18.5
is considered underweight
(you may be putting your health at risk)

18.5 - 25 is considered a healthy range BMI for those under 70 years of age

25 - 30 is considered to be overweight
(you may be putting your health at risk)

30 - 35 is considered to be obese
(you are putting your health at risk)

35+ is considered to be morbidly obese
(you are putting your health at significant risk)

What is a Fad Diet and why don't they work?

A Fad Diet will usually promise you very quick weight loss by asking you to eat meals that are unbalanced nutritionally. These are generally very different from your normal eating pattern and cannot be sustained long term.

You may lose weight quickly due to several reasons including loss of fluid from the body and reducing your calorie intake by omitting whole groups of food.

If you have used a "quick fix" diet to lose weight, Alexander Dietetics can help you change your long term eating habits to remain healthy without regaining the excess kilos.

Lap-Banding

Unless there are special health concerns, Lap-Banding is usually only considered for people with a BMI over 35. Several surgeons are now performing Lap-Banding which is generally thought to be the safest obesity surgery as it can be easily reversed if necessary.

Susan Alexander has several years experience helping those having obesity surgery and can guide you through the different stages of eating. Remember that a Lap-Band does not teach you good nutrition!
